My research is focused on earthquake seismology and seismotectonics. My goal is to understand: (1) the process of initiation, rupture and termination of earthquakes, and (2) seismicity and tectonics by imaging the physical process associated with mountain building and subduction. Every tectonic province has a unique geologic history and correspondingly distinct seismicity patterns. However, the fundamental physical processes are common to many areas. As a seismologist, one of my primary goals is to understand the physics of earthquakes, i.e., the nucleation, propagation, and stopping of rupture within realistic fault systems. A second important goal is to model the generation of strong ground motions by earthquakes. I am also interested in geological processes, such as can be achieved by combining diverse geophysical observations with geological data to construct the thermo-mechanical structure of the crust. Thus, my overall goal has been to understand the seismogenic behavior of the Taiwan arc-continental collision zone.

(Jack): -Do you like to speak English?
(Prof Ma ): -Yeah, I like to speak English since I was a kid.
-What brought you to NCU to our Department?
-It’s very simple. I just... when I finished my high-school, I came to the entrance exam and I got score and I got in. I came to NCU as a student, then continuing I did PhD and then NCU invited me back. Then I came back.
-What is your current work?
-Wow… So many though, haha! I’ll make it simple. Exactly two main topics I am interested in: fault zone dynamics, and tectonic. Seismo-tectonic. But recently I decided to put some effort to earthquake engineering. Because in the past ten years I usually worked on theory, earthquake transfer modeling. But then a lot of people mentioned to me I should put some effort to earthquake engineering, because it is very practical for earthquakes. So I decided to put myself a little bit to earthquake engineering. But it is not now. Maybe in next ten years I will give some results. So Yin Tong (銀桐 Alec) will be the first time to worry on earthquake engineering. That’s why I go to nuclear power station and some consulting companies. But main interest is the science, scientific part.
-What do you enjoy the most at your work?
-I didn’t talk to you that much, but I usually talk to my colleagues. I’m so busy. The reason I am busy is I do a lot of research, I join to lots of meetings, but at the same time I do the Yoga, I need to go to the coffee shop, haha… I need to go to some massage. It makes me very busy. So, I do a lot of things. I thing my feelings are also like you. I feel just like the life should be enjoyable, and work. So I try to find something to make me happier. Traveling and coffee and yoga so on. So, very busy.
- What do you hate there?
-The thing I hate the most is a system plan, oh… how to say… whenever you go for a meeting you have a… discipline… school policy. Like: number one- should be something. If not, you need to do hm… whatever. This kind of checking work what do I do. This administration. And I hate that part, very much. No patience for that, no patience… Even yelling and screaming at the meeting, when people ask me to do that. So I found myself actually not good in an administration work. I have no patience. So that’s why I don’t feel I am a good Chairman. I enjoy very much international research, a lot of visitors or going somewhere for international meetings. But prepare to talk “number one: how much money you have by rule” or something I give up. Like that.
-Your favorite colour.
-Oh, blue I guess. But recently becomes purple. But actually blue, yeah.
-If one Super-boss gives you one month off and pays for anything you want, what would you do?
-Hahaha!… Vacations of course! Europe. Europe and Antarctica, South Africa. Just travel. I mean, if you give me one month, I’d just go everywhere and pay for everything. And luxury hotels… with spa, haha… that’s my favorite.
-Your favorite animal.
- I don’t have any. But now we have a dog at home. So maybe dog. But before really didn’t have.
-Do you like to watch TV?
-Oh, yeah a lot! Haha… Should I say that, haha?
-Do you want to have one more question?
- 71 times 5.
- Three five five, haha... (straight!!!)
